Trees can damage your roof by scraping it, puncturing shingles and other roofing materials.  Branches and leave retain moisture causing rot and also block guttering causing drainage problems.

Moss and algae grow on moist wood shingles and as moss holds even more moisture it can cause rot and the roots work their way through to the wood structure.  Algae grows in shaded damp areas on wood and asphalt shingle roofs.  It retains moisture and causes a black-green stain, again causing deterioration.  Make sure that any near by trees and bushes are well maintained so that shaded areas can not develop.  Make sure your gutters are kept clear.

Rain can get underneath shingles, tiles and other roofing materials working its way through to the roof deck causing the structure to rot and produce mildew, this can also lead to other problems in your property including walls, electrics, ceilings and insulation.  Winds lift shingle edges and other roofing materials forcing water etc underneath them.  Extreme high winds and rain can cause extensive damage.

Don't leave it until bad weather and rain.

Roofs have many enemies and are paramount to your property.  Damage is caused from trees and leaves, moss and algae, snow and ice, condensation, rain & the suns ultraviolet rays and heat.
